... and Justice for ALL! "The gray, or timber wolf, (Canis Lupus) is the best known and most widespread species of wolf. An inhabitant of both open and timbered areas, the gray wolf once was found throughout North America and Eurasia. It has been eliminated from much of its range, however, and is now found primarily in Asia and in North America from Alaska to the northern plains states. Its numbers are dwindling in many areas." Thus the Encyclopaedia Britannica introduces the wolf and sums up the history of this remarkable, intelligent, loyal, social, animal. The ruling has come down from UNITED STATES COURT OF APPEALS FOR THE TENTH CIRCUIT regarding the order by THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR THE DISTRICT OF WYOMING that the wolves intoduced from Canada had to be removed (read killed) from Yellowstone. You can read the entire judgment at the link provided above, but the the gist of the judgment says: "This Court must vacate the District Court's injunction to remove wolves reintroduced into Yellowstone and central Idaho."
As has been the case so often in our history we human beings have taken the position that we are the dominant species and therefore that entitles us to eliminate any thing or any being that we determine to be a nuisance or a problem. As has so often been the case we set out to destroy rather than to understand. In the book of Genesis we are told that "God gave man dominion" over all other life. In fact, that is a mis-translation. The more accurate translation of the Hebrew would be "God made man to be a steward" over all other life. Quite a different focus!! It seems a shame that but for the translation of one word our history might have been quite different.
Stewardship is a very different matter than dominance. To be a steward means to manage or administer the property of someone else. In other words the property does not belong to you, you are taking care of it for someone else whose property it is. If the master returns and finds that the steward has destroyed, polluted and in other ways diminished that of which he was left in charge, what will the Master think; what will the Master do; how will the Master feel? Dominion, on the other hand means sovereign authority, lordship, sovereignty, rule sway, control, the right of possession, domination. A very different "kettle of fish"! This misconception has lead to the Western focus on domination over all creation; but the domination has taken place without the wisdom to rule wisely ... and nowhere is this more evident than in our relationship to other species who share this planet with us. It is especially obvious in our relationship with other beings, YES BEINGS, who we have so little regard for that we destroy their homes, we destroy their families, we destroy their environment. The story of our interaction with our brother the wolf is but one chapter in this long and gruesome history. |
